The BackWho Suffers Back Pain?

Some studies have shown that up to 90% of people will suffer some form of back pain during their lifetime. Injury may occur from acute trauma such as a car accident or fall. However in many instances it is the result of months or years of accumulated stress from poor posture, work habits, lack of fitness and flexibility and faulty body mechanics.

A spinal problem, (commonly wrongly blamed on muscles), more often irritates nerves, therefore, pain, numbness, pins and needles or weakness may be felt referred to other parts of the body. As examples, a problem lower back can refer symptoms to the buttocks and legs, while a problem between the shoulder blades can refer to the arms and chest.

What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain can occur for many different reasons and that is why the initial assessment is so important. It is critical that the cause be determined before any treatment is commenced.
